[realistically speaking] Karl Koweski

the poet in his letter
explains his lack of
recent submissions
by comparing the small
press to fucking
the same old whore

my advice is
before you turn your back
on that old whore
you might want to
make sure you have
the ability to interest
the respectable ladies
out there
in the literary world

[stick your neck out]
JD Nelson

I was gesturing
towards this officer
when all of a sudden:

I was covered
w/ cockroaches,
millions of them
clicking, hissing,
gambling, cursing.

the ideas
just keep flowing,
no matter how much beer
I throw at the brain.

do giraffes ever wish
their dicks were bigger,
instead?

[Me & Jean Harlow ] William Taylor

I was about 17
she was somewhat
younger
and looked just like
Jean Harlow
we'd get drunk
every night
simply because there was
nothing else
to do
I don't think nobody
got drunk
like we
got drunk
but I guess every drunk
thinks that way
anyway there was never
anywhere to go
so we'd just drive around
until we'd end up in some lonely
neighborhood
or empty
park
somewhere the cops
wouldn't bother us
much
and we'd sit in the car
and drink and she'd
smoke stolen
cigarettes
but the best times was when
we'd get some broken down
room somewhere
I'd sit in bed
and watch her smoke
and walk naked
around the tiny
room
laughing and cursing
about something
or other
and I would just watch her
and write poems
inside my head
even now
I can't remember anything
ever being better
than that.

[regrets] Jeremy Smyers

morning light regrets with
eight in the morning sunshine
burn through me like
radiation.
blood soaked toothbrushes,
broken rocks glasses,
along with promises
mark that grudge love
always ends the same way.

READER FEEDBACK:

Dear Mr. Edrington,
I found your poetry to be misguided and un artistic.
And it dont rhyme.
~Ronnie in Michigan

Dear Sir:
please be advised that modern science has yet to develope a pill to help us un-read things. Therefore, now trapped somewhere deep within your reptillian brain a piece of me will always exist. Bummer for you. My ex-girlfriend feels the same way.

[one bullet, seven wounds] Karl Koweski

one of the reservists at the factory
hung a cartoon of the
Iraqi Minister of Information
denying coalition forces'
proximity to Baghdad
as an American soldier
flashes bunny ears
behind his head

no one passes by
the cartoon without
commenting on the
Minister of Information's
desperate audacity

I can only assume
they've never heard
of the magic bullet theory

FEATURED WEBSITE

THE-HOLD.COM

This is one of the top small press literature zines going. Editor Cait Collins has more nuts than most small press editors who publish just about any piece of crap that crosses their doorstep. The fact that she could be Bukowski's biggest fan is beside the point, each monthly issue is filled to the brim with the best small press authors writing today. Ron Androla and Lyn Lifshin are just a few of the familiar characters. Michael Basinki's book reviews are all must reads, and artwork & photos by the likes of CAT Townsend are sure to rock your world. Along with the monthly online thing, Cait publishes the quarterly print journal "Underbeat".

In this day and age when everyone thinks they are an editor (including my lame ass) it is good to see an editor like Cait that lays down some standards. Way to go Cait, you kick some serious ass!

If you have a website or print journal you think belongs here, email me. I will also review chapbooks, but please be advised if I think something sucks I am not shy. Even if it may cost me a place to publish.
